For example, while actually staying in Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang, you will come to know what the taste of home-cooked meals is for yourself: locally produced ingredients, quite possibly those served at home. Most of the hotels offer buffet-style meals, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, for all types of travelers. Everyday cooking in Bhutan uses a variety of fresh vegetables, dairy products, and flavorful spices, making every dish unique and hearty with the warm Bhutanese hospitality.
During the Bhutan tour, we use private vehicles for all transfers and sightseeing, where the vehicles vary according to the group size that is travelling. Paro International Airport will welcome travelers into the search for a comfortable tourist vehicle like a car, jeep, or van, so it depends on the size of the group of visitors.
After arriving at Paro airport, you will be greeted by our tour guide upon exiting the arrival hall. Check in to the hotel, and let’s have your first taste of Bhutanese local cuisine. Then visit the National Memorial Chorten, which is built in honor of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. In the evening you can enjoy the night and explore downtown Thimphu after dinner.
Today you will drive to Punakah, and on the way we will cross Dochula Pass, where you can visit the 108 chortens, which were built by the present Queen Mother of Bhutan, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Indian militants and to liberate the souls of the souls lost. Built in 1637, the dzong continues to be the winter home for the clergy, headed by the Chief Abbott, the Je Khenpo. The dzong was destroyed by fire and glacial floods over the years but has been carefully restored.
Breakfast at the hotel, then you will visit Punakha Valley and the surrounding area. Explore Chhimi Lhakhang for a 20-minute walk across terraced fields through the village of Sopsokha from the roadside to the small temple located on a hillock in the center of the valley below Metshina. Ngawang Chogyel built the temple in the 15th century after the ’divine Madman’ Drukpa Kuenlay built a small chorten there. It is a pilgrim site for barren women—Bhutanese people believe that. Then back to Paro Valley. It is naturally beautiful and home to many of Bhutan’s old monasteries and temples.
After breakfast you will hike to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), the iconic symbol of Bhutan, the sacred Taktshang Monastery perched dramatically 900 meters above the valley floor. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated here for three months. Today, it stands as one of Bhutan’s most revered pilgrimage monasteries, attracting devotees from across Bhutan and neighboring Buddhist countries as well. You will have lunch at the Taktshang Cafeteria, which offers breathtaking scenic views of the monastery nestled into the cliffside. In the evening, visit the farmhouse, where you will experience a traditional hot stone bath. Overnight at a hotel.
After breakfast, our guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your flight to your onward destination.
